Pythagorean table for 2011-12 Spanish Primera División (2011-10-19)

Below is the Pythagorean table for the 2011-12 Spanish Primera División season, for matches played up to 16 October 2011. The standard Pythagorean exponent of 1.70 is used to calculate the estimations.

For all of the talk about Barça's impressive start to the season, they have actually underperformed a bit; that 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad appears to be the difference between an outright lead and a shared one.  Levante have replaced Espanyol as the surprise team in Spain this season, but unlike the Canaries, Levante have played the best defense in Spain and are in line with their statistical expectations.  Real Madrid are also playing in line with expectations, but it's still not good enough.

Looking down the table, Sevilla and Betis are the big overachievers while Sporting Gijón have been the most underperforming team.  Espanyol have a +4 Pythagorean residual but it seems to be down more to luck that overperformance; their poor defensive record appears to have caught up with them in a way that it did not last season.
