Pythagorean table for 2011-12 Italian Serie A (2012-01-15)

We present the Pythagorean table for the 2011-12 Italian Serie A season, for matches played up to 15 January 2012. The standard league Pythagorean exponent of 1.70 is used. The Pythagorean table reflects points won on the field of play, so it does not account for the six-point penalty applied to Atalanta this season.

All of the teams in the top five are performing in line with their statistical expectations, if one looked solely at the goals scored and allowed. Napoli have been underperforming a bit, but it doesn’t make a difference in their current position. Genoa are the big overachievers at the midway point with a Pythagorean residual of +5. Fiorentina and Siena have the lowest Pythagorean residuals in Serie A at -6 and -5, respectively, and are getting sucked into the relegation dogfight.
