CONCACAF Club/League Coefficients: 2012-07-31 version

It’s time for a new season of the CONCACAF Champions League, so here are the latest league and club coefficients for the region. For those of you new to the site and unaware of how the coefficients are calculated, here is an explanation of the methodology.  These are coefficients calculated over the last five seasons of the Champions League, inclusive. The final CONCACAF Champions’ Cup season has finally rolled off.

First, here is the league coefficient list (top ten).  The numbers for Puerto Rico and Canada are misleading since they don’t have national leagues of their own that feed directly into CONCACAF.  Puerto Rico has the PRSL, but the Islanders don’t come from there.  Canada has the CSL, but that league doesn’t have a direct berth into the CCL. American MLS teams played very poorly in the first edition of the CCL, which explains why they are behind Canada/Puerto Rico and so close to Honduras, but improved significantly since then. It’s still Mexican clubs against everyone else.

Below is the list of the top 25 clubs on CONCACAF coefficient. As expected the top tier is dominated by clubs in Liga MX.  The only reason why double champions Monterrey are behind Cruz Azul, who have yet to win the competition, is that Monterrey didn’t compete in the Champions League until the 2010-11 season.  Toronto’s run to the Champions League semifinals in April moved them to the top of the non-Mexican teams, just in front of Puerto Rico Islanders.  Columbus Crew nicked Real Salt Lake as the top American team because they have appeared in the competition more than RSL.
